In Slovenia, PIC is a known advocate for a healthy living environment, nature, and climate!
Recently we have successfully fought to enhance environmental protection in several different cases that resonated with the public. We:
- Prevented, together with our partners, harmful economic activities from affecting our water resources through the referendum for clean drinking water;
- Achieved a legislative change of the Environmental Protection Law that enhances limit values for operating co-incineration installations and brings hope for a cleaner air for the residents of Anhovo in the Soča Valley;
- Used all legal means against the Government of the Republic of Slovenia and state-owned utility company Gen Energija regarding the referendum on the construction of a new Nuclear Power Plant (JEK2) and successfully prevented a premature referendum that was designed to twist the will of the people;
- Prevented a scientifically contentious practice of culling grey wolves in Slovenia through litigation.
With our expertise, we became a key stakeholder in addressing climate and environmental issues.
PIC – Legal Center for the Protection of Human Rights and the Environment is a leading non-governmental organisation in the legal protection of nature, environment and climate in Slovenia.
We have been working on environmental protection issues since the inception of PIC in 1997. In 2010, PIC obtained the status of an organisation operating in the public interest in the field of environmental protection by the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning which it holds to this day.
PIC is particularly active in the areas of access to information, public participation in decision-making and the protection of environmental and climate rights. Wee are the organisation in Slovenia that shapes jurisprudence and wider systems of governance in support of environmental and climate protection through strategic litigation. We successfully litigated in matters such as protection of wolves.
We are also heavily involved in the process of adopting environmental legislation, regulations and policies. We actively and regularly work with stakeholders and policymakers and contribute proposals to major legislative and policy changes in Slovenia in order to enhance environmental protection.
We have developed an efficient environmental law center that brings together legal expertise in the fields of environmental and climate protection, nature conservation, spatial planning and sustainable corporate governance. We are a leading provider of legal analyses in our subject area.
PIC offers free legal help to NGOs, civil society and individuals through the Platform “Zelena svetovalnica”. We are also managing the website “Zagovorniki okolja”, where we raise awareness about environmental and climate issues as well as point to opportunities to actively participate in procedures concerning environmental protection, nature conservation and construction. All relevant publications are also available in our e-library.
Moreover, PIC is an active member of national and international networks:
