During the international protection process people find it difficult to defend their rights and legal interests. As we believe that the provision of free legal help during the procedure is essential to ensure balance of power between the applicant on the one hand and the State on the other, we have been providing free legal advice and representation to applicants for international protection since 2008. From 2020 onwards, we provide this assistance in the framework of the UNHCR project Counseling and Representation of Asylum Seekers.
We inform applicants about the international protection procedure, represents them when they apply for international protection or during personal interviews, and provide legal help for them. We also offer free legal help and representation during the family reunification procedure to people who have obtained international protection in Slovenia. The right to family and private life is a fundamental human right, and our activities aim to make it easier for people to obtain residence permits for their family members and to come and stay in Slovenia.
Since the start of the war in Ukraine, we have been providing free information and legal help to people who have been forced to leave Ukraine because of the war. To this end, we organise legal information and help sessions in municipalities and accommodation centres across Slovenia. We also organise individual counselling sessions.
